Let's plunge into the history of its creation. MC-21 got its name from the abbreviation "21st Century Mainline Aircraft". In July 2007, it was decided to create a short-medium-range MC-21 aircraft.
In 2010, a preliminary design was approved, key technical and technological decisions were made, the main provisions for after-sales service and integrated logistics support were formulated. By 2013, the development of design documentation for basic version of the aircraft, production has begun. And on June 8, 2016, the solemn roll-out of the first experimental aircraft MS-21-300, intended for flight tests, took place. Dmitry Medvedev was present at the event in Irkutsk. From May 13 to 19, 2017 the first flight MS-21-300 performed independent taxiing and speed runs on the runway. This is an important stage before the first flight, during which the operation of systems and engines is checked. The crew evaluates the behavior of the machine, first at low speed, and then faster and faster. The completion of this stage is the runway run with the front leg of the aircraft torn off and a decision on admission to the first flight made. On May 28, 2017, the first flight of the MS-21-300 took place. The flight was like at an altitude of up to 3.5 kilometers at a speed of up to 500 kilometers per hour and lasted 90 minutes. The plane was piloted by a crew of test pilots Andrei Voropaev and Roman Taskaev. On October 17, 2017, a flight was made from the airfield of the Irkutsk aircraft plant to the aerodrome of the LII named after Gromova in Zhukovsky. It is this aircraft that was declared in the flight program at MAKS-2019. At the moment, there are three MS-21-300 aircraft in Zhukovsky for flight tests. The third flight model, equipped with a passenger cabin, will be put on public display with the possibility of visiting. So, what is the MC-21-300? MS-21-300 is a twin-engine low wing with a single tail tail. The aircraft is 42 m long, has a wingspan of 36 m and a height of 11.5 m. Aircraft of similar size, such as the Boeing 737MAX, Airbus A320neo and COMAC C919 are direct competitors to the MC-21-300. The capacity of our aircraft varies from 163 passengers in a two-class configuration to 211 in a single-class configuration. The maximum flight range at full load is 6,000 km (almost like from Moscow to Blagoveshchensk). The aircraft is equipped with two dual-circuit turbofan engines. Depending on the customer’s wishes, the MS can be delivered with PW1400G engines from Pratt & Whitney, or with domestic PD-14 developed by the UEC. And now we will move on to the advantages of this aircraft. The main advantage of the MS-21 over its competitors is the black wing. It is called “black” because it is made of polymer composite materials (PCM). One of the advantages of these materials is their resistance to corrosion and damage propagation. Another advantage is the high strength of the wing, due to which it was possible to design a wing with optimal elongation, which minimized the inductive reactance of the aircraft. That is why, at the design stage, it was decided to abandon the wingtips that are “fashionable” for new liners. The use of PCM in the production of a wing allows you to create a wing with a supercritical profile - this is such a profile in which the upper surface is almost flat and the lower is convex. When choosing such a profile, the wing can be made thicker without a noticeable increase in aerodynamic drag, and therefore to place more fuel in the resulting volume. The next advantage is the widest in its class fuselage. The width of 4.06 m - this is increased comfort for the passengers of our ship. For comparison, the width of the fuselage of the Boeing 737MAX is only 3.8 m. It would seem 26 cm, but this allows you to increase the passage between the rows of seats so that you can almost unimpededly miss the carriage with food, as well as install wider and ergonomic chairs and increase space for luggage. In general, everything is for our comfort. In conclusion, I would like to add that flying a passenger on this machine will not work until 2021. Currently, the MC-21-300 is undergoing a series of certification tests to obtain a type certificate. After receiving it, the aircraft will be put into mass production and transferred to customers.
